Remember that we usually have pain because of an injury of some kind; i.e. tissue damage. In order for the injury to heal, our tissue needs to repair itself. We can influence the repair process in many ways such as: ice in the early stages (day 1-5 post injury) to reduce swelling, movement/stretching (to “organize the scar tissue”), avoidance of further strain, and finally strengthening to protect the area from future episodes. We could take pills and that would take the pain away but would that actually affect the tissue repair? No. How would taking a pill restore movement or strength? We can agree that pills alone would not be sufficient to actually rehabilitate an injury. Literature supports what we at Bonavista Physical Therapy already know: ACTIVE therapy is much more effective than PASSIVE therapy... continue reading >>

Motor Vehicle Injury Treatment MVA - Calgary
In October, 2004, the Alberta government introduced new legislation to
deal with minor injuries suffered in motor vehicle accidents (MVA).
Under the new legislation, if you are injured in an accident and suffer a
minor injury (whiplash, neck or back strain, contusion, TMJ issues,
dizziness, etc) your treatments will be covered by your automobile
insurance regardless of who was at fault.
It is necessary to be assessed by a primary health care provider (physiotherapist, general practitioner or chiropractor) within 10 days of your accident so you can get started on your recovery straight away, and to ensure your claim is processed correctly. These treatments will be billed directly to your insurer with no out of pocket cost to you for up to 90 days following the accident. Read More >>

Orthotics at Bonavista Physical Therapy
Custom orthotics at Bonavista Physical Therapy are molded by Kari Lambden and the molds are sent in to a local lab for fabrication. A thorough assessment of the foot, knee, and hip as well as a gait analysis is completed before molds are made. An examination of footwear is also helpful. A complete exam including molds usually takes about an hour.
Orthotics are generally prescribed for:
a) Shock absorption /stress reduction
b) Motion control and alignment
c) Immobilization and support
d) Correcting deformity

Calgary Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a treatment technique used to relieve pain, enhance healing and therefore improve function. It involves the insertion of very fine needles through the skin at specific points. No medicines are injected through the needles.
Traditional acupuncture has been used in China for more than three thousand years. Research has shown that acupuncture causes the body’s own natural painkillers (endorphins) and anti inflammatories (cortisol) to be released in the brain. This makes acupuncture a great adjunct to physiotherapy. Read More >>

Physiotherapy & Physical Therapy
Physiotherapy or physical therapy is a health profession concerned with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of disease and disability through physical means.
Physiotherapists act as primary care providers (you can access physiotherapy without a doctor’s referral) and determine a patient’s management plan or may work in partnership with other medical professionals.
Conditions managed by a physical therapist are grouped into three categories: musculoskeletal, cardiopulminary and neurological, or maybe multiple combinations of these. Read More >>
