How To Manage Severe Tibial Bone Fractures

Physiotherapy in Calgary for Injury Care

Would you like to learn more about the latest options available for surgical treatment of open tibial fractures? This article might answer some of your questions; and don't forget to make an appointment with your physiotherapist at Bonavista Physical Therapy for your post-op rehab, as indicated by your surgeon.

Orthopedic surgeons will appreciate this article. It is the second part of a two-part series on open tibial shaft fractures. In the first part (published in the January 2010 Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS)), open tibial shaft fractures was introduced as a topic. The focus of the earlier journal was evaluating these fractures and the initial treatment taking care of the open wound.

What is an open tibial shaft fracture? The tibia refers to your shin bone in the lower leg. Open tells us the bone has fractured severely enough to come through the muscle and fascia and out through the skin. With an injury this severe, the jagged edges of the broken bone can cut the soft tissues, nerves, and/or blood vessels causing serious problems. Continue here!

Ice or Heat - Physical Injuries

Any dilemma I'm often enquired is: “Do I use warmth as well as the cold ice right after a personal injury? “. The solution is straightforward. Over the initial 24-48 hours pursuing a intense damage, bear in mind this specific general guideline: “R. I. C. E” –Rest – Ice – Compression – Elevation. This kind of principle is true of ALMOST ALL incidents – also back again as well as throat incidents act in response nicely to help the rocks inside original stages of curing.

You possibly will not be aware that just about all incidents mend in stages. These kind of stages are usually:
1. Inflammatory Period (0-5 days): seen as agony, swelling as well as warmth
-this cycle could possibly be long term in any other case handled properly!
-If this intense cycle lasts lengthier in comparison with 5 days, check with your current general practitioner as well as physiotherapist
3. Spreading Period: (about 5-15 days)
-Scar tissue starts off to make as well as long term contract
-Light stretching out as well as mobility can help injury curing, physiotherapy must be initiated
3. Re-designing Period: (15 days up to a year)
-Scar tissue gets to be tighter as well as better for approximately 3 several weeks
-Scar tissue remodels according to the challenges inserted after that for approximately the as well as lengthier
-More strong pastime would be proper
Not any damage is usually built to mend faster in comparison with normal/natural speed. While the damage will be curing nevertheless, we've got to make certain not to ever hold up curing through unacceptable management in the beginning. Consequently bear in mind 3rd r. I. H. Electronic with the initial 24-48 hours. In the event the inflammatory cycle is over, you should use warmth OR the rocks as well as progressively return to pastime. **Ice linaments are not the same being an the rocks group, and therefore are not necessarily effective in preventing inflammation**.

Intramuscular Stimulation

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is the treatment of chronic pain of neuropathic origin using an acupuncture needle to stimulate a muscle.  Chronic pain of musculoskeletal origin is often the result of shortened muscle(s).  These shortened muscles can result in pain locally in the involved muscle(s) and/or at the joint(s) that those muscles affect or move.  IMS will “relax” the shortened muscle(s) by... Arthritis!

We recently had a 68 yr old male patient who had been complaining of knee pain since a fall 6 months ago. He saw his family doctor who recommended X-Rays that showed he had some arthritis in his knee. Over the past 6 months he had tried two kinds of anti inflammatory medication and steroid injections to his knee with no improvement. The next step was going to be lubricant injections to his knee. The client decided to try physiotherapy on his own with the encouragement of his wife who had been treated successfully here for a previous knee injury. After a thorough assessment, the physiotherapist was able to prescribe a simple exercise for the client. He had to perform 10 repetitions every 2 hours for the next few days. By his second visit, his range of motion had returned to normal and he no longer had knee pain on the stairs or arising from sitting. The client was very happy with his rapid improvement but wished he had come in for treatment sooner! Read more >>

Beware of Temporary Feel Goods!

Remember that we usually have pain because of an injury of some kind; i.e. tissue damage. In order for the injury to heal, our tissue needs to repair itself. We can influence the repair process in many ways such as: ice in the early stages (day 1-5 post injury) to reduce swelling, movement/stretching (to “organize the scar tissue”), avoidance of further strain, and finally strengthening to protect the area from future episodes. We could take pills and that would take the pain away but would that actually affect the tissue repair? No. How would taking a pill restore movement or strength? We can agree that pills alone would not be sufficient to actually rehabilitate an injury. Literature supports what we at Bonavista Physical Therapy already know: ACTIVE therapy is much more effective than PASSIVE therapy... continue reading >>

Motor Vehicle Injury Treatment MVA - Calgary

In October, 2004, the Alberta government introduced new legislation to deal with minor injuries suffered in motor vehicle accidents (MVA). Under the new legislation, if you are injured in an accident and suffer a minor injury (whiplash, neck or back strain, contusion, TMJ issues, dizziness, etc) your treatments will be covered by your automobile insurance regardless of who was at fault.

It is necessary to be assessed by a primary health care provider (physiotherapist, general practitioner or chiropractor) within 10 days of your accident so you can get started on your recovery straight away, and to ensure your claim is processed correctly. These treatments will be billed directly to your insurer with no out of pocket cost to you for up to 90 days following the accident. Read More >>

Orthotics at Bonavista Physical Therapy

Custom orthotics at Bonavista Physical Therapy are molded by Kari Lambden and the molds are sent in to a local lab for fabrication.  A thorough assessment of the foot, knee, and hip as well as a gait analysis is completed before molds are made. An examination of footwear is also helpful.  A complete exam including molds usually takes about an hour.

Orthotics are generally prescribed for:
a) Shock absorption /stress reduction
b) Motion control and alignment
c) Immobilization and support
d) Correcting deformity

Calgary Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a treatment technique used to relieve pain, enhance healing and therefore improve function.  It involves the insertion of very fine needles through the skin at specific points.  No medicines are injected through the needles.

Traditional acupuncture has been used in China for more than three thousand years.  Research has shown that acupuncture causes the body’s own natural painkillers (endorphins) and anti inflammatories (cortisol) to be released in the brain.  This makes acupuncture a great adjunct to physiotherapy. Physiotherapy & Physical Therapy

Physiotherapy or physical therapy is a health profession concerned with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of disease and disability through physical means.

Physiotherapists act as primary care providers (you can access physiotherapy without a doctor’s referral) and determine a patient’s management plan or may work in partnership with other medical professionals.

Conditions managed by a physical therapist are grouped into three categories:  musculoskeletal, cardiopulminary and neurological, or maybe multiple combinations of these. Read More >>

Neck Pain Casestudy | McKenzie Method

I recently had a client (50 yrs old) who came to the clinic complaining of a stiff neck of over 6 months duration. She said the pain was not too bad and that it tended to come and go. She could not remember any particular incident where she injured it. She delayed coming in because the pain was tolerable and she thought it would just “go away on its own”. Continue Reading >>
